Incorporate Family Safety into Your Beaumont Summer Gatherings and Events
Making a hamburger doesn’t seem dangerous until you cook on an open flame where people are congregating. Sunscreen doesn’t sound so important, until you’re nursing first or second degree burns from the sun. Drinking enough water in 100° plus heat is an afterthought until heatstroke symptoms set in. Parents know fireworks are dangerous. It’s a summer jungle of accidents waiting to happen out there!
As you enjoy your July activities, here are a few reminders of what to include in the fun so everyone stays healthy and safe:
- Sunscreen: Sunscreen is essential in July due to the intense summer sun and high UV index. While enjoying activities at Event Centre Lake, sunscreen helps protect your skin from harmful UV rays, reducing the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage. It also helps prevent heat-related issues and maintains overall skin health during outdoor fun.
- Hydration: The average temperature in Beaumont, Texas, in July typically hovers around 83°, often reaching highs in the mid-90s. Hydration is vital while outside in the heat because it helps regulate your body temperature, prevents dehydration, and reduces the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Drinking plenty of water ensures your body can function properly and keeps you safe during outdoor activities.
- Fireworks Safety: The most dangerous fireworks for children during July 4th celebrations are sparklers, firecrackers, and bottle rockets, as they can cause severe burns and injuries. To stay safe, always supervise children around fireworks, ensure they are used in a clear, open area away from people, and keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby for emergencies.
- Water Sports Safety: Beaumont residents enjoy various watersports such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and boating at places like the Neches River and Event Centre Lake. To prevent accidental drowning, always wear a life jacket, never swim alone, and be mindful of water conditions and weather forecasts.
- Barbecue Pit Safety: When barbecuing around children, remember to keep the grill in a safe, stable location away from play areas and ensure a child-free zone of at least three feet around the grill. Always supervise children and keep matches, lighters, and other flammable materials out of their reach. To stay safe, use long-handled tools to avoid burns, never leave the grill unattended, and have a fire extinguisher or bucket of water nearby in case of emergencies.
