Heart Disease: Beaumont Raises Awareness for Heart Health

Beaumont Raises Awareness For Heart Health

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women, surpassing all forms of cancer combined. Despite its severity, many women remain unaware of their risk, often dismissing symptoms or attributing them to less serious conditions. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), heart disease claims the life of one in three women annually (American Heart Association). To combat this alarming statistic, the Go Red for Women campaign was launched in 2004, aiming to raise awareness about heart disease in women, advocate for early detection, and promote heart-healthy lifestyles. This nationwide initiative empowers women to prioritize their heart health through education, community events, and lifestyle changes, emphasizing that heart disease is not just a man’s problem. February’s designation as American Heart Month underscores the importance of this mission, mobilizing communities across the nation to take action.

Heart Month 2025: Local Events in Beaumont

Heart Month in the United States is observed from February 1–28, 2025. Beaumont residents can organize or participate in heart-related events that promote education and community involvement. This is a time to focus on opportunities to learn about heart health, practice emergency skills like CPR, and connect with others in the fight against heart disease.

Here’s a heart-related event happening in Beaumont this February:

AHA Heart Ball
Date: Monday, February 24, 2025
Time: 6–10 PM CST

Women and Heart Disease: A Growing Concern

The Go Red for Women campaign emphasizes that heart disease is not just a man’s problem. Women often experience unique symptoms that can be harder to identify, such as fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath, in addition to chest pain. Unfortunately, many women downplay these symptoms, delaying life-saving care.

In Beaumont, heart health awareness is critical given our local health trends. According to a recent report, the prevalence of high blood pressure and obesity in Southeast Texas has contributed to an increased risk of heart disease among women in the area (CDC). By providing education and resources, Beaumont Emergency Hospital empowers women in our community to take control of their heart health and to know when they are experiencing a cardiac event.

Recognizing the Signs of a Cardiovascular Event

Time is crucial when dealing with cardiovascular events like heart attacks, strokes, arrhythmias, or heart failure. Symptoms that warrant an immediate trip to the emergency room include:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain in the jaw, neck, or back
  • Nausea or lightheadedness
  • Cold sweats

Preventive Measures for a Healthy Heart

Preventing heart disease starts with lifestyle changes. Here are a few steps women can take:

  1. Monitor Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Levels: High blood pressure and cholesterol are significant risk factors for heart disease. Regular screenings at Beaumont Emergency Hospital or your primary care provider can help detect these issues early.
  2. Adopt a Heart-Healthy Diet: Incorporating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while minimizing sodium and trans fats can lower risk.
  3. Stay Physically Active: The AHA recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week to maintain cardiovascular health.
  4. Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol Intake: Both habits can significantly increase the risk of heart disease.

Beaumont Emergency Hospital encourages patients to develop heart-healthy habits.
