Flu Symptoms

It’s that time of year… flu season.  But how do you know if you have the flu or just a common cold?  Do you know the symptoms?  Do you understand the difference? It is important to understand so that you can avoid some of the major complications that accompany the flu, including sinus infections or even life-threatening pneumonia.

Do You Have the flu

The first line of defense, of course, should be trying to prevent yourself from getting the flu.  It is important to remember that the flu is spread via saliva from coughing and sneezing.  You can catch the flu as an airborne illness or direct contact with a person or object.

Those 65 years and older, young children, and pregnant women are at a higher risk than others.

Recovering and Treatment

It is recommended that those who have dealt with the flu wait at least 24 hours fever-free before returning to work and/or school. It is quite likely that even after most of the symptoms have subsided that a lingering cough may still remain for a few weeks.

Occasionally symptoms are severe enough that antiviral medications may be required.  You should seek medical attention to determine this.
