Thanksgiving is a time for food, family, and gratitude — not unexpected trips to the ER. Yet every year, hospitals see an increase in holiday-related accidents and illnesses. From deep-fried turkey mishaps to foodborne illness and travel fatigue, the holiday season can bring more health hazards than most people realize.
At Beaumont Emergency Hospital, we want your Thanksgiving to be memorable for all the right reasons. Here are a few simple ways to keep your household — and your visiting guests — safe, healthy, and stress-free.
Cook Smart
A perfectly cooked turkey is the centerpiece of any Thanksgiving table, but undercooked poultry can cause serious foodborne illnesses.
Use a meat thermometer to make sure your turkey reaches 165°F at the thickest part of the breast and 175°F in the thigh. Avoid taste-testing before it’s fully cooked, and don’t forget to wash your hands, cutting boards, and utensils after handling raw poultry.
Fry with Care
Fried turkeys are a Southern favorite — but they’re also one of the top causes of Thanksgiving-day fires and burns.
If you’re frying your turkey this year, always do it outdoors on a flat, open surface away from trees, walls, or anything flammable. Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and dry before lowering it into the hot oil. And never — ever — leave your fryer unattended.
Our team at Beaumont Emergency Hospital treats burn injuries every holiday season, many of which are preventable with just a few extra precautions.
Store Food Safely
Once the meal is over, don’t let leftovers linger on the counter. Refrigerate cooked foods within two hours to prevent bacteria growth. Divide large portions into smaller containers to cool faster, and reheat leftovers to at least 165°F before serving again.
A little food safety awareness can save your family from a case of post-Thanksgiving food poisoning.
Watch for Seasonal Illness
Thanksgiving often brings people together from across the state or even across the country — and that means germs travel too.
With flu, RSV, and COVID-19 still circulating, it’s important to practice good hygiene: wash hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home if you’re not feeling well.
If illness strikes while you have guests in town, Beaumont Emergency Hospital offers rapid testing, imaging, and treatment for respiratory infections — 24 hours a day.
Rest and Recharge
Between cooking, cleaning, traveling, and hosting, it’s easy to burn out. Lack of rest can weaken your immune system and increase your risk of accidents.
Take time to relax, hydrate, and enjoy the moment. Your body — and your guests — will thank you.
Mix all ingredients in a mug until smooth. Microwave for 1–1½ minutes, until set but still moist. Enjoy warm, topped with whipped cream or a dusting of cinnamon.

Even with the best preparation, accidents can still happen. Whether it’s a kitchen burn, foodborne illness, fall, or sudden fever, Beaumont Emergency Hospital is here to help.
